The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has taken a national leadership role in supporting the development of the Project Lead The Way (PLTW®) Biomedical Sciences Program. As a substantial and founding investor in this workforce related curricular initiative, MSDE is addressing the needs of the Health and Biosciences Career Cluster.
In 2007, the MSDE awarded Stevenson University (SU) a Biomedical Sciences Affiliate Grant and selected the University to be Maryland’s University Affiliate for the PLTW® Biomedical Sciences Program. At present, SU is one of only eleven universities in the nation to serve as a university affiliate for this program.
MSDE’s Division of Career and College Readiness and SU’s School of the Sciences have worked to launch the teacher training and professional development components of the PLTW® Biomedical Sciences Program. The first Summer Training Institute (STI) was offered in July 2007 to prepare teachers to field test the first course in the new biomedical sequence: Principles in Biomedical Sciences. The Core Training (CT), formerly the Summer Training Institute (STI) now includes all four courses in the biomedical sequence.
Stevenson University has a rich history of providing high quality, career-orientated educational programs, and this partnership with MSDE and PLTW® is a natural extension of our collective efforts to prepare an educated, creative, and motivated workforce that will contribute to meeting the global challenges of the 21st century.
